Menu Myths Busted

For most of us college-goers, summer has begun. Along with it’s beginning comes fun nights out, weekends at the beach, and any other combinations of sun, water, and friends. But what we often don’t think about is how much of our activities are based around food. Sometimes it seems like the only logical thing to do, is to meet up for a meal.

Now, I’m not saying we should avoid this. Going out to eat is a great way to relax and even to explore. But, when it comes to healthy choices, there are some serious myths that need busting.

Here are a few of the foods that, at first, had me fooled…

FROYO: There is no believe it or not, the facts are clear; frozen yogurt is not all that healthy for you. It’s definitely an alternative to ice cream, but it’s nowhere near as healthy as we might think. On average, half a cup of vanilla soft serve froyo has 117 calories. That might not seem like a lot, but when have we ever opted just half a cup? Not to mention, that those 117 calories come from the almost 20 grams of sugar and carbohydrates that ultimately turn right to fat. Then there are the endless toppings and before you know it, you’ve got yourself one bikini-busting snack.

SALAD: Often the first thing diet-conscious patrons look for on a menu is the salads section. However, this is almost never the healthiest menu option. Don’t get me wrong; I am a huge proponent of great salads. My family might even argue I’m salad obsessed. But restaurants often load these delicious meals with creamy dressings and serve huge portions, which we eat because we think, “Oh, it’s just a salad.” Our better option is almost always to choose a grilled chicken or fish with a veggie side. Then you can leave full, satisfied, and guilt-free. Plus you don’t have to be the odd one out who orders the salad.

SNACK BARS: Whether it’s Clif’s, NutriGrain, or Special K, we all have our go to snack bar for a day at the beach. Sure they look healthy, and probably hold a mere 110 calories, but we have without a doubt been tricked. Those low calories don’t mean a thing because they come almost entirely from sugar and won’t keep us full for very long at all. Even protein-heavy bars will have a negative impact if you’re not on an intensive exercise routine. The best option is to back up a banana and some mixed nuts. Or check out a few snack tips here. They’ll provide lasting energy without the guilt.

There are plenty of healthy options, no matter where you're headed this summer. Look out for the not so healthy options, and you'll keep up that beach body without a problem!
