Celebrate Your Success

We’ve been battling the desserts for the past month; running and exercising five days a week; and to top it off, we’ve made it through midterms. It really feels incredible to have stuck to a routine and to have reached a goal, however small it may be.

With this success often comes an amazing natural high that we must relish in. I used to find myself afraid to show my excitement. I’d quietly cheer myself on in my head, give my number one cheerleader—Mom—a call, and then move on from my thoughts of my own success.

Well let’s stop right there. There is never a need to feel guilty about sharing our success. This doesn’t mean we should all go post to Facebook and Twitter about how amazing we are. Instead it’s important to find a healthy way to reward ourselves for whatever we have accomplished recently—even if it is not exercise related.

A great way to do this is journaling. Not interested in the fifth grade internal monolog you picture yourself having? Do it list style. Write each thing big and small that you feel was an accomplishment for the week. As you aggregate all of your success you’ll get that “I’m awesome” feeling without having to put your satisfaction into words.

Then, the next time you’re feeling like you’ve have hit a rut, you can reflect on all of the positive changes you’ve made recently. It not only keeps us focused, it gives us the encouragement we need to reach our next success
